Was it fair for TC to go home? Biggest Loser Recap – January 6 – Season 14, Episode 1

Do you think it was fair for Biggest Loser to hold an elimination after Nikki walked off the show? Many people are sounding out on Facebook that BL shouldn’t have had an elimination since the white team lost a member. That said, if the red team or blue team had fallen below the red line, would they want to grant the same pass to them? Unlikely. It’s sad that TC had to go home, but, at the end of the day, the Biggest Loser is a game, and this is how the game is played.

TC Biggest Loser Eliminated Episode 1Poor TC! He cried! Would he have gone home if Nikki hadn’t selfishly walked off the show because she couldn’t take the rigorous work-outs and emotional soul searching? First off, come on. What did you think you were getting yourself into by going on the Biggest Loser? Not only did she make herself out to be a quitter on national TV, but she TOOK that spot from SOMEONE who WANTED to be there. You’re kidding yourself if you think you’ve signed up for anything other than physical, nutritional, and yes – emotional – torture. Shouldn’t you have known you couldn’t handle it? So sad that she took away the dreams of two people by her own self-righteousness.

Alright, enough harshness. It’s sad that TC had to go home. Would he have been under the red line if Nikki had stayed? Who knows. While he won’t have the benefit of 24/7 dedicated workouts and personal trainers, at least he can bring home a new drive to lose weight, and can learn to do it in his normal environment – making his long term weight loss more realistic and attainable.

First Weigh In – January 7, 2013

So today was my first weigh-in. Despite my over-indulgence on soft foods (see: dental issues), and a birthday dinner out for my sister in law last night at Carraba’s, I documented a 2.6 lb loss! Yay!! Now I know it’s not a Biggest Loser size loss, but it’s a healthy, reasonable, and realistic weekly number.

I installed the Weight Watchers barcode scanner app this morning and was impressed! I’ve used the Lose It App, and really liked the tracking  interface and barcode app. WW made it nice and simple to take the photo, quickly brought up all the product information and PointsPlus values, and then gave me an option to track it. It was blazing fast! I’m happy about this as it takes away a lot of hassle with inputing nutritional information and makes tracking a lot more achievable.

Tonight we’re making a healthy version of spaghetti and meatballs. I guess I planned all this when still on my soft food plan ;). Instead of breadcrumbs, I’m using wheat germ in my meatballs. I sure hope it turns out alright! I have tons of basil left over from a broccoli pesto I made last week, so I’ll be sure to add tons of flavor to the meatballs with my fresh basil. Also, rather than pasta, I’m making this easy cheesy spaghetti squash (sans the chicken since we have the meatballs). My spouse has class tonight (getting a master’s degree) so won’t be home until 10pm. Late dinner!

Lazy Dinner – Sushi Takeout

I’ve been a little under the weather and have had some dental issues this week on top of it, so I’ve been sticking to mostly soft foods. I saw the dentist yesterday and got my teeth fixed up, so I was free to BITE! You never realize what you take for granted until it’s gone. This applies to so many facets of life. Cherish your teeth. Really.

Anyway, as I mentioned, I’ve been under the weather. Not completely sick, but with that feeling that I’m coming down with something. Congested, scratchy throat, hurts to swallow at times, and extreme exhaustion. I am so tired today and I don’t know why. Hopefully it’s just a cold and not something more serious. Oh yeah, and I have an ear infection on top of it! It started the other day, and feels swollen and inflamed. If it doesn’t pass in the next few days, I’ll have to make a trip to the dreaded doctor.

Tuna Avocado Inside Out Roll SushiSince I was so tired, we had a lazy dinner. Sushi! I’ve been craving it since NYE, but couldn’t really get it until my teeth were fixed. We skipped all the unhealthy appetizers we usually get and just stuck to hand rolls and sushi. It was soooo good and a nice healthy way to skip cooking.

What do you like to do when you’re too tired or too busy to cook?

Biggest Loser Starts on Sunday, January 6 2013

Biggest Loser Season 14 Returns 1/6I’m very excited to see Jillian Michaels returning to the Biggest Loser. She has always been, by far, my favorite trainer and I was disappointed when she decided to leave the show. I’ve been a devoted BL fan since the 3rd season, but I simply couldn’t watch the last two seasons without Jillian. I look forward to seeing how they tackle childhood obesity, given the delicacy of the subject and having to handle the children with “kid gloves”. I don’t think I even need to say that it’s an extremely important issue in this country that needs to be dealt with YOUNG. I was an obese child, and while my mother did try to put me on a diet a few times, it was never enough. There needs to be a collaborated effort among everyone who touches a child’s life – from parents to siblings to teachers to relatives to friends parents, etc. While ultimately many would argue it’s the parents’ responsibility, it needs to be understood that the child needs a strong support system. We have made some great strides with incorporating healthy foods onto fast food menus and school lunch menus. Hopefully the momentum keeps up and we continue to see real change.

First New Habit – Dr Oz Green Juice!

I always struggle to eat breakfast in the morning. Don’t get me wrong, I love breakfast foods such as eggs, bacon, potatoes, etc. You know, all the good stuff. Actually, I love Mexican style eggs. I’ve recently discovered an affinity for eggs with salsa, so I often make scrambled eggs with cilantro, and top them with salsa or taco sauce. YUUUM. But as I said, I struggle to have this stuff in the morning. I prefer it at lunchtime. I often wake up ravenous, but the thought of food in the morning turns my stomach. I do fine with smoothies, milk shakes, iced coffee, etc. Just not food. I don’t know why… I’ve just been like this my whole life.

Anyway, we’ve decided to cut out drinking for the whole month of January as we jump-start our healthy lifestyle choices. What better way to detox from holiday binge-fests than a morning juicing regimen? Surely my stomach could handle some juice.

After searching for the best “green juice” recipes to serve for New Year’s Day breakfast, we came across the a recipe for Dr Oz’s Green Juice. Just when I was about to dust off our hibernating juicer, I discovered this juice was actually done in a blender. Score! One thing I hate is figuring out a) how to put the juicer together b) if I still have all the parts to the juicer or if some have mysteriously gone to the land of missing socks c) how to wash and then hide the juicer until next year.

I chopped all the ingredients up and threw them in the blender, and voila, a surprisingly delicious new breakfast staple was born. I was skeptical. It smelled funny. I hate parsley. And it was THICK. But I was pleasantly surprised at just how good it was. I definitely recommend it!

Dr Oz Green Juice

Dr Oz Green Juice Recipe (Adapted from Dr Oz)

2 handfuls of spinach
1 stalk of celery, chopped
1/2 cup parsley, chopped
2 apples, cored (I did not peel)
1 cucumber, peeled and chopped
1 lemon, juiced
Fresh ginger (the size of a thumbnail’s worth)

Place all ingredients in a blender. Add ice or spring water. Puree and serve!

Some additional add-ins (we didn’t try any of these yet but loved the juice as is):

  • Another cucumber
  • Unsweetened juice
  • Raw carrot
  • A banana

Let us know if you tried the juice, what changes (if any) you made, and how you liked it!

A little about me

I’ve struggled with my weight my whole life. I was born a 10+ pound baby and was always the biggest kid in my class growing up. Back in college, I joined Weight Watchers and dropped about 70 lbs in only 5 months. I had plenty more to go, but the “real world” caught up with me. I graduated college, started a stressful job in NYC, started eating out A LOT, discovered the magical world of margaritas, and voila, I gained all my weight back.

I kept recommiting to losing the weight again. The first time was so easy, this should be a piece of cake, right? Unfortunately I’ve learned this isn’t the case. You see, I lost all my weight on Weight Watchers. WW revolves around tracking food and counting points. I was so heavy that all I needed to do was change my eating habits to lose that first 70lbs. I plateaued because I never incorporated exercise into my weight loss plans. That was mistake number one. Then I became comfortable. I “knew what I was doing” and didn’t feel I needed to MEASURE anymore. I started eyeballing portions. “Oh yeah, that looks like 6oz of chicken”. “Yep, just a teaspoon of oil in the pan”. Then work got busier and busier as I took on more responsibilities, and I stopped tracking. I knew how many points I had, surely I could mentally keep track. Mistake number three. You see, WW is all about making lifestyle changes and making better food choices. That said, if you get too comfortable and stop tracking and measuring, you’re doomed to fail. I never fell back into my old habits of fast food, junk food, etc. I kept on with my proteins, vegetables, and high fiber foods. So why was I failing? Portion control. It’s as simple as that.

So, knowing this, why has it been so hard to get back on board? It’s hard to break the mentality that you know what you’re doing since you’ve done it before. Guestimating point values became second nature. Getting a new habit (like tracking) to stick is hard. There are so many life forces that work against you when you’re trying to better yourself: work pressures, taking care of your home, taking care of your spouse, taking care of your kids, taking care of your pets, taking care of your cars, all those frozen drinks calling your name on your tropical vacation, etc… how could you possibly have time to take care of yourself?

This is the problem. And this is where it ends.

There is NO reason to live like this. I am taking back my life, one day at a time. Sure, I will slip up from time to time. That’s why this is a day by day journey.

I hope you’ll follow me in my journey, and share yours with me as well. I plan to use this space to blog about my journey, share recipes, tips, motivation, and of course my failings. Hopefully we can all learn something.
